What
is IPL?
Intense Pulsed Light [IPL] technology is a treatment breakthrough
that can correct a variety of benign skin conditions, such as
facial skin imperfections, the signs of photo-aging, pigmentation,
freckles, unsightly small veins, and other blemishes. It offers
safe, non-invasive solution that can be tailored to your individual
condition and skin type, providing superior cosmetic results
and outstanding satisfaction
How does it work?
IPL is a non-invasive treatment that uses high intensity pulses
of visible light to treat specific skin conditions. The light
energy is absorbed into particular target cells with colour in
the skin. The light energy is converted to heat which causes
thermal damage to a specifically targeted area.
A cold gel is usually applied to the area being treated, and
you will be given dark glasses to protect your eyes from the
bright light. The smooth glass surface of the IPL handpiece is
gently applied to your skin and pulses of light are applied.
What are the possible side effects?
The appearance right after treatment is similar to what you will
see after a good exercise workout. The flushing and redness
will last from a few minutes to several hours after treatment.
If your skin is quite loose you may experience some swelling.
The brown age spots and uneven pigmentation will turn slightly
darker after treatment. The effects of this darkening will
last up to 10 days although this may vary as each patient is
unique.
How many treatments are needed?
To achieve the ultimate results 4-6 treatments are recommended,
however depending on the severity of the individual problem being
treated will determine the amount of treatment required.
Treatments are normally 3 to 4 weeks apart, in some cases patients
achieve excellent results and are happy with 2 to 3 sessions.
By dividing the full program into several treatments, the procedure
provides gradual improvement with very low risk – and, it preserves
the wonderful “no down time” feature that people appreciate so
much. In some cases for minor capillaries only one treatment
is required.
What areas of the body can be treated
with IPL?
IPL can be performed on the face, neck, décolletage, hands, arms,
back and virtually any part of the body that requires rejuvenation.
Most patients start with the face or décolletage and with results
being more than satisfactory they continue to treat other areas
of the body.
What are the advantages of using
IPL?
There is minimal downtime, anaesthesia is not required, it can
be done as a lunch time procedure and you can return to your
normal activities immediately.
Do I need to prepare for treatment?
Patients are advised to wear sunscreen for at least two weeks
prior to treatment. Refrain from sun exposure as sun burnt or
recently sun baked skin cannot be treated.
In some cases the patient is required to use a lightening solution
for two weeks prior to treatment to assist with results.
