Anti Wrinkle Treatments

• Can anyone have it?

  Although research to date has not shown any risk, in the interest of good medical practice, we would not recommend this treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. A full background medical history is discussed between the patient and doctor.

• Are anti-wrinkle injections safe?

  Anti-wrinkle injections have been used for medical purposes such as controlling muscle spasms in children with cerebral palsy for over 20 years; it has been used in the cosmetic industry for over 10 years without any reports of long-term side effects. Although the substance is derived from a bacterium, as are many of our other commonly used medicines, it is able to be used for treatment because it is applied in extremely small amounts and when applied properly does not spread outside the immediate muscles into which it is injected.

• How do we get that relaxed ageless look without looking stunned?

  Creating a naturally young looking face requires advanced injecting techniques, but most importantly an artful injector who is sensitive to the client’s needs as well as examining each face individually and studying the way particular muscles are being used.

• How does it feel?


  A local anaesthetic cream is applied to the skin and ice is used to minimize the discomfort. Most patients find the treatment quick and easy and not too uncomfortable, some describe it as feeling like an ant-sting bite for a few seconds. The needles used are tiny micro needles and once the injection is complete, there is usually no discomfort. Some patients experience a mild headache after treatment but this is not very common.

• How long does it last?

  The initial effect usually occurs within 3 days, with the maximum muscle relaxation reached within 1-2 weeks, and lasting approximately 3 to 4 months. After this, you should return for a repeat dose to maintain the effect.

• In what areas can they be used?

  They can be used to relax the muscles of the frown between the eyebrows, horizontal lines across the forehead, around the eyes to prevent or improve the appearance of lines or in the chin to prevent or improve the contracting or ‘pull-down’ of mouth corners. Also for the “bunny lines” or fine lines we develop around the nose from squinting and other facial movements.

• Is this used instead of dermal fillers?

  Preventatives and fillers do different things. Preventatives are often combined with fillers where deep, permanent creases have already formed. Collagen regeneration treatments are also best used in conjunction with wrinkle prevention to prevent further wrinkles and prolong the effectiveness.

• What about lines that are present without frowning?

  Lines that are present at rest (static lines) can be treated with dermal fillers

• What are anti-wrinkle (muscle relaxant) injections and how do they work?

  Anti-wrinkle injections are composed of a natural purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smoother, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. The muscle relaxant inhibits the communication between the nerves and the muscles therefore disenabling them from contracting and forming wrinkles. The number of injections required varies depending upon what part of the face is being treated.

• What are the possible side effects?

  There may be slight swelling or redness at the injection site and a possibility of bruising may occur. Some patients may have a sensation of heaviness around the injected area for a short time after treatment.
